St Andrews Typhoons Ice Hockey Club - A History
Founded in 2011, the St Andrews Typhoons are an ice hockey club made up of mainly St Andrews students but the team is also open to all university students in Fife, Dundee and further afield. No matter the skill level, they offer opportunities for everyone to come down and play for the Typhoons in both practice and in games. Currently with 24 players, the team is always looking for new players to make our team all the better.
The Typhoons division currently is made up of teams across the UK, including as close as Edinburgh and as far as Sheffield and Nottingham making road games memorable and an important part of the Typhoons experience.
The highlight of the year is the Jonny Wookey Memorial Game against the Edinburgh Eagles in April. With over 1500 people on record in attendance (more than 10% of University of St Andrews), it has the loudest student environment in St Andrews sports, year after year.
Our Retired Numbers
Ollie Cutting - #9
Ollie Cutting is the original founder of the St Andrews Typhoons and played for 5 seasons. Building the team up from scratch, getting ice time and creating the traditions that hold to this day, his work remains in the lifeblood of the Typhoons. Ollie was key in setting up the Jonny Wookey Memorial Game after Wookey's tragic death and brought the greatest era of popularity the Typhoons have seen. As a player, he won the 2012-2013 Tier 2 National Championships and was a 4 time Jonny Wookey Memorial Game Champion. With a career of 30 points split up of 13 goals and 17 assists he would challenge every team but he especially dominated the Nottingham Mavericks. For his work in founding and shaping the Typhoons to who they are today, his number 9 jersey was retired on April 29th, 2024 at the 2024 Typhoons Ice Hockey Awards.
Sam Wallace - #39
Sam Wallace is our longest tenured player of the Phoons and a legendary goaltender. Starting as one of the founding members of the initial team, he played with the team for 9 seasons over 12 years. Throughout his time on the team, he has been a foundation of the team's success. He holds career records for the team, such as having 11 shutouts and 2.28 Goals Against Average. He is our only goalie to ever score a goal. He was on the team for both their 2012-2013 Tier 2 National Championship and 2021-2022 Tier 1 National Championship victories and a 7 time Jonny Wookey Memorial Game winner. For his work and devotion to the Typhoons, Sam Wallace had his number 39 jersey retired on April 29th, 2024 at the 2024 Typhoons Ice Hockey Awards.
The Biggest Event of the Year - Jonny Wookey Memorial Game
What is the Jonny Wookey Game?
The biggest event of the 2nd semester in St Andrews, the Jonny Wookey game is the headlining rivalry facing a matchoff against the Edinburgh Eagles in front of a huge and raucous crowd at home. Averaging over 1000 people in attendance, students and people from all around Fife fill the Fife Ice Arena with the loudest cheers in British Ice Hockey.
The event began in the memory of Jonny Wookey, a co-founder and integral part of the Typhoons who tragically passed away after graduation.
The next Wookey game will be announced in 2025.
